FINAL ESSAY DIRECTIONS

You’re almost there!

The HIS 4100 Essay is the culmination of your history major. It is where you show off what you’ve learned in the major in terms of research and writing, and hopefully, produce a paper you are proud of. The department’s goal is that this HIS 4100 paper can be used as a graduate school writing sample or that it could be submitted to a journal. This is why the traditional essay is the final product, so history majors can use it as they want at a later point.

As you begin to finalize the first draft of your paper, present your work thus far to your peers, and move towards the final version of your HIS 4100 paper … a few guidelines to follow in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  1. To make things fair and minimize distractions for the evaluators—as they focus on the content of your paper—format the paper as follows:
    • LENGTH: 20-25 pages.
      • NOTE: Figures (images, charts, graphs, maps), footnotes, and appendices do not count towards the total length.
      • Because the department expects a minimum of 20 pages, aim for 21+ pages so there is no question about your work.
    • FONT: Times New Roman
    • FONT SIZE: 12 pt.
    • MARGINS: 1 inch all around (top, bottom, left, right)
    • SPACING: Double Spaced
      • These are easy points to gain, like built-in extra credit.
    • AVOID: Double spaces after periods (end of sentences), and double spacing after paragraphs.
    • SUBMISSION FORMAT: Either Google Doc or .Word document (no PDFs).
    • TITLE PAGE: (Your name), HIS 4100 – A History of the Middle Class, Spring 2021, Dr. Rwany Sibaja
      • Your actual paper would, therefore, starts after the Title Page (you can use a page break function)
      • DO NOT use the footer space to leave your name or the instructor’s name. It is fine, though, to leave page numbers if interested. Just make sure in your settings that the first page is not numbered, and that numbering starts on the first page of your actual paper.
  2. Save your final file as “(Last Name) HIS 4100 Essay Sp 2021” and email it to me no later than by the end of the Exam Period: May 4 at 1:30pm.

NOTE: The deadline is the absolute final deadline. Earlier submissions are welcome!
